Hakkinen joined McLaren as a test driver in 1993 and took on the responsibility of race driver after Michael Andretti was dismissed by the team. In 1994, he became the lead driver after Ayrton Senna left to join Williams. Following a life-threatening injury during qualifying for the 1995 Australian Grand Prix, Häkkinen bounced back in 1996 and 1997. 1998 saw Häkkinen clinch his first world championship after a season-long duel with Michael Schumacher and another title in 1999. 2000 saw the year that Hakkinen conceded the title to Schumacher with 2001 yielding two victories. Schumacher said Häkkinen is the man he respected the most during his Formula One career.
